How do I...?

access library training courses?

Look on our training page for a list of courses and how we can deliver them. For classroom sessions you can book online from the intranet or phone us to book on them. You will need to phone to arrange one-to-one sessions or specific group sessions.

access my library catalogue account online?

You will need a username and pin number to access your library account. Contact the library to get your username and pin number. Go to our online catalogue and to the login button (next to the green help button) on the top right hand side of the screen. Type in your username and pin. Contact us if you forget your username or pin.

access online resources?

Our quick links page gives you access to our online resources. To access our online resources you will need an OpenAthens username and password.

access the library out of hours?

We have 24 hour access. You will need your Christie ID badge to enter outside staffed hours.

borrow books?

Ask a librarian for a barcode so you can use the library self-service machine allowing 24/7 borrowing and returning of books, great for night staff. You can borrow up to 10 books if you are a full library member.

find the library?

The Library is located on the second floor within the Library and Learning Zone (Dept 60). From the main corridor:

  • head towards Pharmacy (Dept 36)
  • turn off the main corridor to Pharmacy
  • either take the lift or go up the stairs just off the corridor
  • immediately to the left. Go along the doctors’ corridor to the end and turn left
  • go through the doors, past the seating area and through the double doors.

The Library is accessed via the door on the right along this corridor. You will need your Christie ID badge to enter outside of staffed hours.

get help using the databases?

We offer classroom, one-to-one and bespoke group sessions. Look on our training page for a list of all our courses. To join a classroom session contact us or book online from the Intranet. For one-to-one or bespoke group sessions please contact the library.

get my article added to the Christie repository?

You can email the publication details to and we will upload it into the repository. Or you can upload a publication yourself, first contact our administrator (446 3455) as permission is needed. Then follow the instructions on the repository site. This publication will be checked before it is made public. Importantly it must be research that was produced while an individual was working for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

get the latest published information about my field of interest / expertise sent to me on a regular basis?

We can conduct a search/searches for you on your area/s of interest/expertise. Email the library with the details of the topic/s you are interested in clearly stating that you would like the results updated until further notice. Each month we will run the search and send you any newly added citations and abstracts to papers (often with full text links where available). 

join the library?

All Christie staff and students can join the library. Either complete this online form or call into the library to fill out a registration form. We will need to see your Christie ID badge for paper registration. Please ask for an induction so you know how to find the information you want.

obtain journal articles?

With a full reference you can search BrowZine for the journal. For most journals you will need an OpenAthens username and password. If you are struggling to find the article, either ring or email us to help.

obtain a book/article not held at the Christie?

If we don’t hold a journal or book that you need, we can order a copy for you to use. There is currently a £5.00 charge per item a for this service. We can check if your department has an account with us and therefore will pay for your item/s.


Your ID badge allows you to photocopy. Copyright restrictions limit how much you can copy from a book or how many articles you can copy from one issue of a journal. Information about copyright issues are on a poster besides the copier. If you are uncertain check with library staff.


Use your ID badge to print. Be aware there are copyright restrictions on printing from published materials (see the poster beside the printer).

place a reserve on a book?

Open the Library catalogue and login with your username and pin number. Search for the title you want and tick the record. From the tool bar (above) select the book and padlock symbol and then click on the floppy disk symbol. To set up a PIN email the library.

recommend a book?

Email us the information of the book with an explanation of why you think it will be useful.

register for OpenAthens?

You can self-register preferably on a Christie PC but you do have to use your work email address.

return a book?

We have a book deposit box by the library entrance or you can use the self-service facility on the top floor.

renew a book?

Renew online - go to the library catalogue and login with your username and PIN. Under My Portal summary you will see current loans, click on this and it is clear how to renew your books. You can phone us on 446 3452. If your books have reached their maximum number of renewals, then you will need to return them. Email the library if you do not know your PIN

request a literature search?

Email us the information on the topic you want us to search for you. The information that we need is covered in more detail on our literature search page.

search the catalogue for a book?

Open the library catalogue. You don’t need to login. Enter your term in the search bar selecting word, subject, author etc as applicable, and click the search arrow. You can modify your search with the modify results button.

use a computer in the library?

You will need a Christie IT to login to the Christie computers in the library. 

use my own laptop in the library?

You can bring in your own laptop and link it to our guest wifi network. You cannot link to the Christie network unless you have an authorised Christie machine.
you can only access the Christie network from an Christie PC.

access the academic network?

Unfortunately we currently do not have access to the academic network. Wifi is available in the library, if you can access the academic network with a VPN.
