Dr Shanks undertakes in-house reporting of biopsies and resection specimens, focusing on his main area of interest, urological pathology. He also undertakes pathology reviews at the request of clinicians and receives large numbers of pathology consultation (opinion) cases from other pathologists (from the North West and from throughout the UK).
Dr Shanks trained in medicine in Manchester and later completed a postgraduate MD degree at the Queen's University of Belfast. He was Head of histopathology from July 2010 to June 2013 and before that was clinical director of pathology for six years. He is lead pathologist for urological pathology at The Christie. He receives many opinion cases from other pathologists in the North West region and nationwide. He participates in specialist external quality assurance schemes (two of the national schemes are in urological pathology). He is a Fellow of the International Society of Urological Pathology.
