The Christie is internationally renowned for cancer treatment and research and prides itself on providing the best care for its patients.

We became a Foundation Trust in April 2007 which has allowed us to embark on a highly ambitious plan to expand and develop our patient services, research and education.

We have an exceptional reputation for patient care, research, performance and financial management, and never has this been more apparent than in the high number of awards and accolades we have received so far this year. Recent wins include:

Our Achievements in 2011Open

In 2011 we have achieved a number of prestigious national awards, including:

National Staff Survey Results, confirmed best in country

We were ranked best in the country in the national staff survey in the Association of UK University Hospitals rankings.

Best Innovation Service award for back to work patient pilot

A pilot to help Christie patients get back to work after cancer treatment or carry on working during treatment won Best Innovation Service at the national Vocational Rehabilitation Conference.

We have been working with Macmillan Cancer Care and Shaw Trust on the pilot, which was one of several pilots focussed on this issue around the country.

Good Communication awards winner for patient treatment centre opening

We won the Mixed Mixed award in the Good Communications awards for our patient treatment centre opening programme

Independent Healthcare award finalist for Private Patient Partnership

We were a finalist in the Public Private Partnership category of the Independent Healthcare awards, with HCA, our private patient partners, for our joint private patients venture.

Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice finalist

We were shortlisted for the Green Apple Environmental Best Practice Award for our sustainable development and carbon reduction project.

College of Medicine's Innovation award finalist

Our complementary therapy team was shortlisted for the College of Medicine's Innovations Award. 

Shire Innovation Specialist Registrar (SpR) Fund award

Dr Caroline Henson, our medical co-ordinator for the Macmillan late effects project won a Shire Innovation Specialist Registrar (SpR) Fund award for her research proposal.

Caroline will gather data on patient outcomes before and after gastroenterology assessments, with the hope of supporting the development of a multi-disciplinary team to manage the gastrointestinal effects of pelvic cancer treatment.

In 2010 we achieved a number of prestigious national awards, including:

National First Women Award for Chief Executive

Caroline Shaw, our chief executive was the joint winner of a national First Women Award in recognition of her pioneering work at The Christie.

The awards celebrate trailblazing women across all industries in the UK who have broken new ground and opened up opportunities for other women. She was the first ever NHS winner and shared the award with Emma Harrison, founder of the international training company A4e (Action for Employment).

Innovative Clinical Leadership Award Finalist

Rhidian Bramley, consultant radiologist and our clinical director for support services was a NHS North West Leadership Academy annual award finalist for the 'Innovative Clinical Leadership Award' for his Picture Archive & Communication Systems (PACS) work.

Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry Joint Working Award 2010 Finalist

Angela Ball our research and development manager, and Sally Sambrook from AstraZeneca, were finalists for the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) Joint Working Award 2010.  The award recognises excellence in collaborative and partnership working between industry and the NHS. 

Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare Award Finalist

We were shortlisted for the 'Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare Award' in the Health Business Awards.

Cancer Nurse Leader of Year' Nursing Times Award Finalist

Helen Ferns, senior research nurse won highly commended for the 'Cancer Nurse Leader of the Year' Nursing Times award.

Nursing Times Finalist for Flu Campaign

Our infection control team was shortlisted for the 'Infection Control Award' for their work on the flu campaign

Greater Manchester Building of the Year Award 2010 Finalist

Our new patient treatment centre was shortlisted for the Greater Manchester Building of the Year Award 2010.

Pfizer Excellence in Oncology Nursing Award Winner

Steve Hill, procedure nursing specialist won the 'Pfizer Excellence in Oncology Nursing' award for leading the implementation of day case abdominal drainage.

National Employee of the Month Award Winner

Steve Hill, procedure nursing specialist won the new NHS 247's 'Employee of the Month' award for setting up a new service for abdominal drainage as a day case procedure.

'Cash Back for Christie' campaign Award - Double Winner

The 'Cash Back for Christie' campaign won two awards at the 'How Do' Public Services Communications Awards -  'Best Low Budget Campaign' and 'Best Public Services Communications Campaign' (the second award was joint with Liverpool City Council for its European Capital of Culture campaign).

European Public Sector Award Finalist

The Christie was a finalist in the 'Leadership & Management for Change' category.

NHS Leadership Awards, Shortlisted for Leadership Aaward

Dr Chris Harrison, our medical director was one of just three people shortlisted for the 'Quality Champion of the Year' award in the national NHS Leadership Awards. He was selected for his role in improving the quality of care for patients in terms of safety, clinical effectiveness and patient experience.

Nursing Times Highly Commended Awards

Our procedures team and young oncology unit teams both received a 'highly commended' at the Nursing Times Awards. The procedures team was highly commended for the 'Patient Pathway Award' for its abdominal drainage daycase service - and the young oncology unit was highly commended for the 'Child Health Award' for its 'Sometime's Its Cancer' campaign.

Nursing Society Poster Competition Winner

Nurse clinician, Carole Farrell won first prize in a poster competition at the UK Oncology Nursing Society Conference in Brighton. The poster was based on 'Exploring the scope of senior oncology specialist nurses' practice in the UK.

North West NHS Innovation Award Finalist

Tom Marchant, senior clinical scientist in North West Medical Physics came third in the Software or Systems category at the North West NHS Innovation Awards - for his Cone Beam CT Correction Software for Adaptive Radiotherapy.

In 2007 we achieved a number of prestigious national awards, including:

Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Awards

The hospital's finance department won the 'Clinical Engagement Award' at the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Awards 2007.

They were applauded for establishing a highly-effective process with the Drugs & Therapeutics Committee to fully assess new drugs and technologies as they arise.

Nursing Times Awards

The Young Oncology Unit (YOU) won 'Team of the Year' award at the Nursing Times Awards 2007. The team won the award for increasing referrals, its development of the 'Christie Crew' patient and ex-patient group, its involvement on national developments for young cancer patients and support programme for young patients.

The judges said that the young oncology unit team made sure that everything they did revolved around the patient.

Nurse clinician Carole Farrell was also shortlisted for the prestigious 'Chief Nursing Officer's Award' at the Nursing Times Awards.

Pfizer Excellence in Oncology Awards

The lung cancer team at the Christie and Wythenshawe Hospitals won 'Oncology Team of the Year' at the Pfizer Excellence in Oncology Awards 2007.

The team won the award for an innovative and patient-focused team approach. The judges felt that the team had gone 'above and beyond' the call of duty with a team approach that other hospitals can learn from.

North West PR Awards

The Christie's launch of Manchester Versus Cancer and the 'don't be a cancer chancer' campaign won two 'golds' at the North West PR Awards: first place for both 'Best Integrated Communications' and for 'Best Design'. The awards cover PR work undertaken by commercial organisations, PR agencies and the public sector.

Healthcare Scientist of the Year Awards

Steven Smith, a computer scientist for North West Medical Physics was runner-up for the 'Innovation in Service Development Award' at the Healthcare Scientist of the Year Awards 2007.

North West NHS Innovation Awards

The Wade Radiotherapy Research Team and North West Medical Physics won 3rd prize at the North West NHS Innovation awards.

Healthcare Communicators National Awards

The Manchester Versus Cancer 'don't be a cancer chancer' campaign won two 'silvers' at the Association of Healthcare Communicators national awards 2007 for 'Best Campaign' and 'Most Innovative Communications'.
